Man on the run for beating up a Catholic Priest

Police in Lusaka are looking for a man only identified as Mwale of Kalingalinga Anglican Church for allegedly assaulting an Anglican Church priest whose name has been withheld.

The incident occurred today at 1030 hours in Lusaka’s Kalingalinga compound, while the priest was preaching at the pulpit, the accused walked to the front and ordered the priest to stop preaching.

According to Zambia Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo, when the priest resisted, the suspect begun dragging him and punched him on the face with fists and he sustained swollen lips.

Mrs. Katongo explains that initial investigations have revealed that the accused person is among a group of church members fighting the priest over the church car park space and it is further alleged that the priest has been calling for church elections which has angered some church members.

She said a medical report form has been issued and a manhunt for the suspect who is currently on the run has been launched.

Mrs. Katongo said police who went to the scene found the church locked and members dispersed while investigations in the matter have continued.
